Dispersant. The use of dispersant is not recommended where physical recovery
of oil is feasible and it should be the last means to deal with oil spill pollution.
The choice of dispersant must be approved by the National Marine Pollution
Management Council (NMPMC). Dispersant type BP-AB, Enersperse 700,
Corexit, super dispersant 25, shell VDC etc are few common type of dispersant.
Mechanical Recovery at Water Body. Mechanical recovery constitutes the
most common approach for combating marine oil/chemical spills. It is a lengthy
and exhaustive means to deal with oil spill.

Oil Spill Response Capabilities of Bangladesh
To effectively handle an oil spill incident in the maritime domain of Bangladesh,
4 pillars of preparation are required. Those are; a comprehensive National
Disaster Management Contingency Plan, trained manpower, specialized
equipment and dedicated Pollution Control Vessel (PCV). In acquiring those
capabilities, Bangladesh has made quite a head way so far. Presently, Bangladesh
has following oil spill response capability to handle a small to medium level
response:
BN. Although Bangladesh Navy (BN) doesn’t have any dedicated ship fitted
with specific oil spill response gear but the Ships and Aircraft of BN will be of
great support to respond during any oil spill crisis. BN has good number of ships
that may be utilized to provide firefighting support, tow effected ship, transship
recovered oil, spray water on oil etc to minimize fire risk. They may also be
deployed to cordon and isolate the area for maintaining regularity. In addition,
BN helicopter and Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) may be used to spray
dispersant on the affected sea area. All these activities will supplement the oil
spill response operation to a great extent.
