Oil Spill Pollution (Sheen rule) refers to the release of liquid petroleum
hydrocarbon into the environment, and is a form of pollution. An oil spill is
considered as pollution if a harmful quantity of oil is discharged in the water. It
has to fulfill three criteria; firstly a quantity of discharged that violates state water
quality standards, secondly it causes a film or sheen on the water surface and
thirdly it leaves sludge or emulsion beneath the surface. This is commonly
known as the “sheen” rule. A floating sheen alone is not the only criterion that
triggers the Oil Spill Pollution.

Sources of Marine Pollution
The pollution of marine environment is largely caused by pollutants arising from
land-based sources. Some pollution can be measured at any point of time called
point source, for example litters from beach and industries. Again there are some
discharge that is difficult to quantify is nonpoint source.
Land Based Pollution. The source of land based marine pollution in
Bangladesh is numerous. Firstly, the waste injected into the sea from
mills/factories, industries, household and daily garbage etc drained into the basin
is polluting the ocean greatly. Small plastic toy, tiny item, polythene bags,
aluminum can, trash, human waste that are thrown into the river system without
thinking constitutes a major pollutant of the coastal water.
Air-Based pollution. Chemical in the atmosphere released from mill factories
that dissolved into the sea/river is the major source of air based sea pollution.
